Love and Best Wishes!

So, one reason we didn't send out one of those fantastic cards that we love to get, (thanks to everyone who sent theirs our way!) is because we didn't take a family picture until today :)
Hope you all had a wonderful day today and our prayer is God's richest blessings for each one of you for the new year!
Double Dutch - we hope you're pleased to see Steve's toque being stretched by our famously goofy Cody!
On a side note, it amazes me how many people still look and smile, somewhat incredulously, at the number of children packed so close together in our family.  One man came past in his shorts and he was definitely meeting eyes so I mentioned that I couldn't help but notice his shorts.  His reply?  and I couldn't help but notice your basketball team :)

Tonight on our way to see Auntie Shelly, Cara spoke into the darkness of the van.
"I think Auntie Shelly was crying when she left Uganda but I don't think it was whining or complaining.  I think she cried because she wishes she could give them more food..... And I think that's pleasing to God."

Love that "little Shelly" :)

Some Gooders :)

I just haven't been taking time to record the special things I know I will enjoy reading a few years down the road, so I'm going to try getting back into that again.

Super special night tonight when I realized we had a public library book that Cam hadn't seen yet and could probably read.  Steve and I sat on the couch and listened with tight throats and grinned over his head as he made his way slowly from beginning to end.  (needed a bit of help - don't want to give the impression we think we have a literary genius here)  There is something absolutely INCREDIBLE about watching your precious kids catch on to reading.  Grade 1 has got to be one of the toughest classes to teach - Cam's has 16 boys!!! But it must also be one of the most rewarding watching those eyes light up with understanding.

Anyway, Cam hadn't even shut the book yet when Cody piped up, "hey Mom, can you read it again fast?  I want to understand it this time!"  That's Cody!

Tonight after I tucked him into bed he came upstairs and sadly announced, "it's not the same anymore."  "what's not the same," I asked?  "It's not the same as sleeping in the trailer!  It's lonely in my bed."  It didn't take him 1 second to take me up on my offer that he could go crawl in bed with Cara.  He was asleep in minutes.  Good thing she was asleep already because she doesn't need the snuggling time like he does.  What she doesn't know won't hurt her :)

Took them 3 Days!

Saturday Brian showed up to help Steve install the carpet...they did a fantastic job of it.  Then Leanne showed up to help with all the little details that go into finishing something like this on a Saturday... like paint touch ups, furniture washing, etc, etc.  Brian and Steve set up the beds and yes, the beds DID have to be built into place and there is a generous 1/2 inch of wiggle room between the beds/baseboards/ walls, etc.
In fact, it was a moment of humor when I realized I was panicking about the single brace for nothing seeing as that loft bed isn't going ANYWHERE... not even to vacuum.

Anyway, today after school Sam and Cam took the clothes pin bucket and (SECRETLY) went to town. (I really thought they wouldn't get till Sunday night before starting on it!) They were a little distressed when Cody discovered them but by the time supper came around they were all down there playing like the best of chums.
Now I have to figure out exactly how to organize it properly so that we can empty our bedroom of everyone's dressers and clothes :)

Come a long way!

2.5 months ago we started here... lots of water and lots of rotten flooring :S

Tonight, after Steve and Martin did finishing work all afternoon we are here:

It's coming along and I'm so thankful!

Ps. Dad O. this is for you with love :)

Makes Me Smile

We haven't had a face this cute around here since Sam lost his first top tooth :)
I guess I could have washed his face first but every time he grins at me and every time I hear that tiniest of lisps I can't help but smile.

It's a Wrap!

Today Leah had her final vaulting moment...or at least final until she talks me into driving her over there because she has an open invitation to stop by to work in the barns or have a lesson.  Thanks to Alisa and Barb who have been such an amazing part of Leah's life these last 3 years!!

Today they had the usual October show and Leah was allowed to participate as her final vaulting event.  She went as Pippi :)

I haven't seen Leah vault much for the last few months as I was dropping her off and Steve was picking her up and I have NEVER seen her vault on Tristan - the team's biggest horse.
I will admit that while I think her mount up is absolutely beautiful and stunning for such a tiny girl/huge horse combo, I always hold my breath until she's actually up!  (It's quite hard to see but it's the first couple seconds of the video where she gets on Tristan by running beside him, giving a big jump, throwing her leg up and over all the while using her arms to pull herself the rest of the way up.)
It was a very cold but VERY fantastic day.

The In Between!

Because our outside looks like this...almost straight mud... in the back yard...
on the side

and in the front!
But we can still use our tramp!!

This would be our room, our bed, their mattresses, their clothes, their toys, OUR combined MESS!
So we're sleeping here!
So when my neighbor phoned me up yesterday morning and offered her clothesline for my wash??!?!?!  It was fantastic! That fresh air just perked us (maybe just me :) ) right up!  Thanks, Sue.

Another Beautiful Day

This morning I called my sister and announced I was going on a field trip and I did not need a babysitter!

There may or may not have been a bunch of moms/dads/teachers who felt sorry for Cara and Cody as they were subjected to "stand together, SMILE!" for about 80 pictures.  But I really wanted to get a nice one of them together also in celebration of being 5.  I think this was picture 88 and the first one that Cara smiled.

See?
For you Auntie Care.
An absolutely gorgeous day at the salmon spawning grounds!

Leftover Paint

A little while ago there was a post on facebook that went something like this...

"You might be dutch when".... and there were so many great comments.  Then the other day I just laughed at myself.  If the shoe fits, wear it!

The twins were doing some finger painting (with brushes) and called it quits long before their ice cube tray palette was empty.  I just couldn't wash all that paint down the drain so I mindlessly started using it up.
As I proudly enjoyed my relaxing moments production I smiled... I know I might have some dutch blood when I have to stop everything I'm doing to use up the rest of some mixed up, already been enjoyed finger paints!

and the "babies" are.....

  • FIVE!!
  • super excited to be on the brink of opening some gifts
  • giving me cheesy grins with their cakes

I tried a birthday party for the two of them together.  They were both allowed to pick 3 friends.  One little girl couldn't come. That made seven 5 year olds under my care for 2.5 hours.
I learnt something about myself.
A kindergarten teacher I am not.  Next time I won't be trying to mix boys and girls again!

Sure am thankful for these two, though, everyday brings another bit of fun!

Today

There are many things I would like to share but here's the picture of the day.
The spot to the far left still has the underlay on top of it but unfortunately the water kept on going...
There was a lot of water to make it that wet.  Now detectives, where, when and how did that water come??!?!
ps.  the girls would like you to know that was REALLY stinky.
pps.  with much thankfulness I would like to say that Leah's room, aside from the closet was totally okay.
ppps.  this was all done thanks to Steve and my Dad who showed up and stayed for the day. Not only did he help rip out flooring but he perfected the plumbing so the washing machine now drains directly into the pump hole instead of first into my laundry tub.  Therefore, my laundry tub is now functioning as a tub instead of a drain!  Now to first get it clean :)
pppps. to make a few of you smile... my Dad commented at lunch that the prediction is for a nice warm week next week.... my reply?  Perfect!  Monday the addition, Tuesday the lawn....Steve was not amused :) :)

Sam's 8!

Has been for a while already...I'm a little behind here.
Sam wanted his cake to be a surprise.  He covered his eyes and waited until I said it was ready.
His favorite bird is still the bald eagle and he's really hoping to use his birthday money (from this year and past years!) to buy a pair of binoculars.  He's looking to get serious with his birding!
He has such a great smile...even with those front teeth :)
His Aunty Shelly and I set up a bit of a ribbon course in the basement hallway.  Object: get from one end to the other without touching any ribbon!  It was too hard to get a picture of but it sure was a lot of fun.
Especially destroying it at the end.  Boys will be boys!
He also wanted to play a game he had found in a book.  So we copied a few of these little men, taped them to pop cans and set them up on the shortest ladder we could find in the church :) They each took a football and took turns trying to knock all the men down.
These two are lego buddies.  They are clueless about what it's like to grow up without a friend in the house all the time.
Just a glimpse of another special day flown by!  We sure do love you, Sam!

Got up this morning SO VERY THANKFUL for yesterday's beautiful 1/2 school day!!  We headed out to the Heron Reserve with the super cool list you can find off this page.  We crossed off nearly everything on the list (except pine cones and smelling pine trees :) )  We saw one snake, bunch of frogs and the returning salmon... first day in the creek.  We also avoided the bear that was spotted 1/2 hour before!

With the rains this morning the sunshine already feels like a distant memory but, boy, I'm so thankful for having been able to enjoy it!

Saturday's Work

Saturday came with the promise of rain and there was still a lot of work to do.  Rain wasn't really considered convenient and the hope was to get as much done before it came.

This is what the driveway was looking like Saturday morning.  The piles just kept getting bigger and messier!
It was Brian, Les, Dad and Steve all hard at work, digging, laying pipe, tar-ing the foundation walls etc.
The dump truck dumped the gravel on the road because there was no room for it anywhere else.
A mess, but that machine sure makes quick work of it.  Thanks, Jomi Construction for the use of the digger!
Uncle Les brought this mean machine along and we were VERY thankful for it!
Notice the gorgeous blue instead of dark gray in the sky!!  So thankful the rain held off until we were finished.  The driveway was already "cleared".
The trenches were starting to be filled in.  The kids were disappointed when they saw it because they were hoping to have to walk across the moat on a board all gang plank style!
Still were BIG piles to climb and fill up boots with.
We had to leave long before the work was done. They first had a bath :)
Steve and Dad had this system worked out for the narrow side of the house.
Then we left.  One of the things I did was watch Leah give a demo for some Rotary Club members.  That would be Leah upside down there :)  So much fun being a flier!!
And by the time we came home they had dug a 14' hole, filled it with proper drainage and closed it back up.  Then they smoothed out all the dirt...
but those are pictures for another post.

Once again so thankful for the expert and hardworking help and for perfect weather!!

A Monday Morning Photo

I laugh about it now but he did give me a scare when I first saw him and when I think about how differently it could have turned out.

You know you're still tired when your papa wakes you up, sends you to the tub to get washed for school and you fall back asleep when you do your usual lay on your back thing.
He was not happy to be shaken awake and find himself being laughed at by 4 siblings and his mom.

Anyone have any suggestions?  It's not like he was short on sleep because he fell asleep early last night, he just always has a VERY hard time waking up.

Feeling VERY thankful that he was safe!!

Our Castle...

has a moat!!!  (And there are plenty of crocodiles about!)

And do not be deceived...that moat is about as deep as Steve is tall.
 Hi Cam!!
These kids had a hoot this afternoon!!
Redoing the drainage is proving to be a dirty and chaotic job.  But a lot of FUN too!

Thanks to Dad, Brian and Steve who worked VERY hard today!

On Selling Chocolate Bars

Our dear children have once again returned from school with chocolate bars to sell.  Actually, only the 3 oldest came home with them but let me tell you all 5 were VERY eager.

Now, they happened to come home on a week in which we had GORGEOUS weather.  The kind of weather that is uncommonly warm for the month and the kind that melts chocolates.  The kind that has dear children whining after walking from the 4th to the 5th neighbor's door.

Now, I happen to actually enjoy going door to door once I'm out there BUT I vetoed all chocolate sales last week.

This afternoon saw us summoned :) to a generous neighbor's house, a neighbor who waited all last week for the kids to show up.  So off we went to sell chocolates, play with toys and generally sit around and enjoy some tea.  It was a marvelous hour but by the time we left for home I needed to get cracking at supper.  So we trotted in fits and starts for home.

One dear boy was whining for his forbidden sucker.  A couple others were too tired to run for very long periods so picture us in a straggly line, running for a bit, walking for a bit, mom calling out bits of encouragement mixed with idle threats, mom swinging a bag with two boxes of chocolates and two skirts.  I'm sure it was a comical picture.

ESPECIALLY to the two guys I DIDN'T notice standing on the driveway on the opposite side of the road!!

I had already turned the corner and headed partway home when I heard Leah and Sam calling for me to come back.  I turned around and they had come to a dead stop at the edge of the sidewalk.  They were glancing somewhat nervously at me and I knew right away that something was up.  I called to Cara and Cody to keep on running home and that we would be right there.  They of course didn't listen and stopped to see what we were doing.  Then they started heading back to us.

In the meanwhile a gentleman just home from a hard day at work drove up in front of his house and put the truck into reverse.  He was intending to back into his driveway and get into the house to eat some supper and put his feet up.  I'm sure of it.

But no!  First Cam went and stood on the end of his driveway calling Cara and Cody to come.  Then, they started coming, first going past his truck to Cam, then going back to his window thinking it was someone they knew wanting to say hello.  Then slowly making their way back across his driveway all the while totally oblivious to the fact that this guy was now on minute 3 of patiently waiting for this mother to get her act together and get her kids OUT OF HIS WAY!

I finally did and we all trekked back to see what had gotten Leah and Sam all tied up.  They announced that some guys across the street were asking to buy chocolates.  Or more truthfully, when they had seen Leah's box of chocolates they had yelled, "CAN WE BUY SOME CHOCOLATES?!" and scared the dickens out of my poor meek, mild and quiet children.

My mashed potatoes were getting further and further behind but believe you me, I wasn't going to pass the chance up to sell some chocolate bars!  I gathered my ducklings around me, checked for traffic and made my way across the street all "Make way for Ducklings" style.  My heart stuttered a bit when I saw what we were getting into.

A little pit bull pup came running across the driveway toward us and instantly two of my quiet children were shrieking and wailing and setting the guys to laughing.  They kindly allowed me to try and calm and gather my kids together (all the while laughing all joke-of-the-year style) before sending this super obedient doggy back into the house.  With the dog gone it was down to business.

By now I was somewhat frazzled.  Nice guys but they were big, tough, tattooed men.  My age, not little teenaged boys trying to pull off an act.  They were the real deal.  And they were both peeling off a $20 and needing change I didn't have.  It also crossed my mind that we had already kept them waiting those same 3 minutes, plus, I was proving myself to be a bit of a scatterbrain with too many kids and chocolate boxes to keep track of.  Sigh!

Then they offered free chocolate sales person advice.  "Next time just say you don't have the change.  We'll just buy more chocolate."

Yup, uh huh, kind sirs, you just wait and see.  Next time we'll be all prepared.  We'll come confidently strutting across your yard, bang on the door and let you know we have 15 bars that have your name on them.  Also, I would like to offer you a coupon book from Girls Craft Club.  $10 please.

Gulp!

Or... maybe not.

Because I was too chicken to talk them into buying 25 more bars than the 8 they already had, we still have more chocolate bars to sell.  We'll keep you posted if any sale tops this one for excitement!

The Good Thing Is

If it has to be held together with duct tape....
at least they make bright and cheery versions now :)
